For Chennai Super Kings, victory in this match was very important as victory could keep them in the race for playoff but with this defeat, Chennai has now become the second team to be out of the playoff race.
Mumbai Indians defeated Chennai Super Kings by five wickets on Thursday to knock them out of the IPL-2022 playoff race. Mumbai showed a one-sided game in this match and defeated Chennai. Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and decided to bowl first and troubled Chennai with the very first ball. Even after the fight of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the Chennai team was bundled out for just 97 runs in 16 overs. Mumbai achieved this target in 14.5 overs for the loss of five wickets. For Chennai Super Kings, this match was very important in terms of playoff as a win could keep them in the race for playoff but this defeat ended all chances of Chennai going to the last-4.
This was the second match of this season for both these teams. In the match played earlier, Chennai had won and Dhoni’s bat was run in that match. By winning this match, Mumbai not only equalized that loss but also gave them extra pain by getting Chennai out of the playoffs.
Mumbai did not get a sorry start
However, Mumbai also got initial setbacks, chasing the target of 98 runs. He tried to start well but it didn’t happen. On the fifth ball of the first over, Ishan Kishan was caught by Dhoni on the delivery of Mukesh Chaudhary. Kishan scored six runs, his score was the team’s score. Simranjit Singh made Rohit Sharma his victim on the total score of 30. Rohit could only score 18 runs. Mumbai had sent Daniel Sams at number three to finish the match early with some big shots but Chaudhary ended his one-run innings on the third ball of the fifth over. Tristan Stubbs, playing his first IPL match, also became a victim of Chaudhary. He could not even open the account.
Tilak took charge
After the initial setbacks, Mumbai’s young batsman Tilak Verma took the responsibility and played a brilliant innings to give Mumbai victory. Hrithik Shokin supported him. However, Hrithik fell victim to Moeen Ali after scoring 18 runs on a total score of 81.
Chennai got a blow on the first ball
Chennai got a shock on the very first ball. Devon Conway was made lbw by Sams. Conway could have survived here but he could not take DRS. DRS was not available in the first two overs of this match as there were no lights in Mumbai. After him, Sams dismissed Ali (0) in the same over. Jasprit Bumrah put Chennai in trouble by sending Robin Uthappa (1) to the pavilion. Then Sams ended the innings of Rituraj Gaikwad (7). Dhoni was on the field and he expected Ambati Rayudu (10) to support him but Rayudu was made his victim by Riley Meredith.
Dhoni fought alone
Dhoni kept fighting alone from here. Shivam Dubey got out after scoring just 10 runs. Dwayne Bravo, along with Dhoni, added some important runs for the team, but Bravo played the full toss ball of Karthikeya in the hands of the fielder. He scored 12 runs and shared a partnership of 39 runs in 29 balls with Dhoni. In the same over, Karthikeya walked Simarjit Singh (2).
Ramandeep sent Mahesh Teekshana to the pavilion without opening the account. Mukesh Chaudhary (4) was run out and with this the innings of Chennai’s team came to an end. Dhoni remained unbeaten on 36 off 32 balls with the help of four fours and two sixes.
