New Delhi: Former West Indies captain Brian Lara is counted among the greatest batsmen of all time. He has created a mountain of runs with his bat. He won many matches for the West Indies with his bat and saved many matches for the country. He played one such innings on this day i.e. March 14 in 1999 in Jamaica. His innings scripted the defeat of the legendary Australian team captained by Steve Waugh.
The Australian team was on a tour of the West Indies at that time. The first match of the series was played at Sabina Park in Jamaica. The match started on 13 March. The Australian team had the first batting and this team was all out after scoring 256 runs in their first innings. Steve Waugh scored a brilliant century.

Lara and Adams set color
The Australian innings ended on the second day of the match and the West Indies’ first innings began. But the hosts had a very poor start. This team had lost its four wickets for 34 runs only. It seemed that Australia would soon pile up the West Indies. But West Indies captain Lara dashed his wishes. He took hold of one end. Jimmy Adams supported him. Both of them shared a 322-run partnership for the fifth wicket to bring West Indies back into the match. By the end of the second day’s play, West Indies’ score was 377 runs at the loss of four wickets. Lara was unbeaten after scoring 212 runs and Adams was unbeaten after scoring 88 runs.
However, on the third day, Lara increased his account by one run and was dismissed. He faced 344 balls and scored 213 runs with the help of 29 fours and three sixes. Adams had missed his century. He scored 94 runs in 252 balls with the help of eight fours. Before Adams, Lara was supported by Pedro Collins but he retired hurt on a total score of 56. Adams came only after him and he had a great partnership with Lara.

The West Indies were successful in winning the match on the basis of the partnership between Lara and Adams on the second day. West Indies had taken a lead of 175 runs over Australia. The Australian team was bundled out for 177 runs in the second innings and then the hosts had to score only three runs to win, which they scored easily. With this, the West Indies had also equalized 1-1 in the four-match Test series. Lara was adjudged Player of the Match for his brilliant innings.
