The Athletics Federation of India broke ties with Javelin’s national coach Uwe Hohn. It was told from the Federation that it is not happy with their work and soon two new foreign coaches will be appointed. Uwe Hahn hails from Germany and has been a world record player in Javelin. The contract of this 59-year-old veteran was only till the Tokyo Olympics. The AFI has sacked long jumper S Sreeshankar’s coach S Murali, who is also his father, after his poor performance in the Tokyo Olympics. The 22-year-old Sreeshankar, who achieved the qualification level with a national record of 8.26m in the Federation Cup in March, failed miserably in the fitness trials just ahead of the Tokyo Olympics. After this AFI decided to remove his coach. The decision was taken after a two-day executive council meeting in Jaipur.
About Uwe Hawn’s removal, Athletics Federation head Adil Sumariwala said, “We are bringing in two new coaches and replacing Uwe Hawn because we are not happy with his work.” We are also looking for a foreign coach for Toor (shotput player Tejinderpal Singh Toor). On the other hand, about the removal of Sreeshankar’s coach, he said, ‘We are not happy with his coaching program, the first action has been taken and we have changed his coach.’ The coach had given in writing to the AFI that Sreeshankar would at least repeat the qualification performance in Tokyo. After this AAFI gave him approval to participate in the Olympics. Sreeshankar, however, posted his worst performance since the Tokyo Games.
Uwe Han arrived in November 2017
Uwe Han was appointed for one year in November 2017. Then he was given the responsibility of training Neeraj Chopra, Shivpal Singh and Annu Rani. In the 2018 Commonwealth Games, Chopra won gold while staying with him. But then he went with Klaus Bartonij of Germany itself. Just before the Tokyo Olympics, Uwe Han sparked controversy by saying that he was blackmailed by the SAI and the AFI to sign contracts. Along with this, there was also talk of not getting adequate facilities to the players.
Trial tournament will be organized
The AFI also said that the team for these tournaments will be selected by conducting a national championship-like tournament or final trials before the Olympic and World Championships. This has been done so that the player is on top of his form before the big competition. AFI’s planning committee chairman Lalit Bhanot said that India will send its best team to the Asian Games next year, but that may not be the case with the World Championships and the Commonwealth Games. “Those who qualify will be sent for the World Championships but for the Asian Games we will send the best team,” he said. As far as the Commonwealth Games is concerned, it will depend on which competitions we are expected to do well and where we do not have a chance to win a medal.
