Asian Championship is being played in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh.
On the last day of the Asian Archery Championship, India went into two finals in the recurve category and could not cross the big wall named Korea in both. India suffered a one-sided defeat in the finals of the men’s and women’s team events on Friday, although they managed to win the silver medal. Apart from these two silvers, a bronze medal was also won on Friday, which Indian archers won by defeating Uzbekistan 6-0 in the recurve mixed team event. India ended the campaign with one gold, four silver and two bronze medals.
In the last season too, India had won seven medals, including one gold, two silver and four bronze. This time too, India’s weakness in the recurve class was exposed in front of Korea. India has not won a gold medal in this Olympic category since 2013. Jayant Talukdar and Deepika Kumari were the last Indian archers to win gold in the recurve, having won the mixed team event in Taipei eight years ago.
Men’s team kneeled in the final
The recurve men’s team last won gold in 2007 while the women’s team never made it to the podium. The men’s recurve team included Kapil, Praveen Jadhav and Partha Salunkhe, who were beaten 6-2 by top seeds Lee Seunghyun, Kim Pil Jung and Han Woo Tak. The second seed Indian team succumbed easily and scored six, eight in the first set. The average score in the third set was 56 but by then it was too late. Korea won 57-52, 55-53, 54-56, 57-55.
Women’s team lost 0-6
The women’s recurve team lost 0-6. The women’s team comprising Ankita Bhakat, Madhu Vedawan and Ridhi were defeated by Korea’s Soo Jung, O Yeejin and Lim Heijin 57-52, 59-49, 56-60. In the recurve mixed team, Kapil and Ankita defeated Abdusatorova Geodakhon and Amirkhan Sadkov of Uzbekistan 6-0. Jyothi Surekha Vennam, who had won silver three times in the only gold World Championships, won India in the women’s compound category. She also won a silver medal in the mixed team category with Rishabh Yadav. India also won the silver medal in the compound men’s individual category, which was given by Abhishek Verma. Rishabh Yadav won the bronze in the compound men’s team category along with Verma and Aman Saini.
