Ashwin ‘retired out’ in IPL 2022, why not ‘retired hurt’? Know and understand the difference between the two

We have heard batsmen having ‘retired hurt’. In IPL also this word has been echoed before. But the incident of Ashwin being ‘retired out’ is the first incident in the history of the BCCI league.

In these, in the year 2010, Shahid Afridi of Pakistan was against Northants. In the year 2019, Sonam Tobji of Bhutan took place in the match against Maldives and in 2019 itself, Bangladeshi League team Qumila Warriors batsman Sunjamul Islam was against Chattagram Challengers.

What is ‘Retired Heart’?

Well, you saw the examples of ‘retired out’. Now understand how it is different from ‘Retired Heart’. So as is evident from both the names. The name ‘retired hurt’ suggests that the player is injured. He goes off the field after getting hurt. In such a case, the umpire does not give the batsman out. Meaning that he can go to bat again. In this case, ‘Retired Heart’ is also written on the score board in front of that batsman’s name.

How Is ‘Retired Out’ Different From ‘Retired Hurt’?

Now come Ashwin who has been ‘retired out’. When no batsman is injured or sick. And if he goes out of the field on his own or with the will of his captain, then he is considered retired out. Ashwin was also not hurt. Nor was he ill. Rather he was ‘retired out’. Retiring him out was a strategic decision of Rajasthan Royals, so that Riyan Parag could go to bat. This is the reason why ‘retired out’ was written in front of his name on the score board of Rajasthan Royals.
