After the death of Congress leader Ambareesh, Sumalatha came into limelight when she announced to contest the Lok Sabha elections. Sumalatha had approached the Congress for the ticket, but the Congress and the JDS fought the election in alliance and the Mandya seat went to the JDS, fielding Nikhil Kumar Swamy. Sumalatha contested this election as an independent and won by more than 1 lakh 25 thousand votes.

Sumalatha’s husband Ambareesh has been a big Congress leader
Sumalatha’s husband Ambareesh was an actor-turned-politician. He spent his whole life in Congress only. He had joined Congress in 1994. Later, after not getting ticket from Mandya, he left the party and contested in 1998 from JDS. After this he went back to the Congress and won the by-election. In 2004, he won on a Congress ticket and also became a minister in the Manmohan Singh government. He resigned from the ministerial post in 2008 in protest against the Cauvery Tribunal’s decision. He was made the fur minister in the Karnataka government in 2013, but was later sacked by the then CM Siddaramaiah. He remained in Congress till his death in 2018.
Why didn’t Sumalatha join Congress?
After Ambareesh’s death, Sumalatha wanted to join the Congress, she had even sought a ticket from Mandya, but Congress state president D Shivakumar opposed it. In 2019, when Sumalatha asked for the ticket, at that time Congress and JDS had announced to contest the elections in alliance. At the behest of D Shivakumar, this seat went to the account of JDS and here Nikhil Kumaraswamy, son of Ace HD Deve Gowda, entered the fray. Sumalatha did not give up and announced to contest the elections as an independent. It is said that BJP and Congress supporters got together in the election and they defeated Nikhil Kumar Swamy by a margin of about 1.25 lakh votes.
