Manipur Election Watch and ADR have analyzed the affidavits of all 92 candidates who are going to contest 22 seats in the second phase of assembly elections on March 5. Only two women candidates are contesting in this phase.

The ADR report said that out of 92 candidates, 16 (17 per cent) candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves. While 14 candidates (15 per cent) have declared serious criminal cases against themselves. According to the ADR report, the JD(U) has the highest number of criminal cases, ie four candidates (out of a total of 10) in the electoral fray among various political parties. Whereas out of the 18 analyzed candidates from Congress, four are contesting.

Murder and rape cases registered against some candidates

At the same time, out of the 11 candidates analyzed from the National People’s Party (NPP), two are in the fray. Apart from this, out of the total 22 candidates of BJP, only two candidates have criminal cases against them. The report said that four candidates each from JD(U) and Congress and one each from NPP and BJP have declared serious criminal cases against them. At least three candidates are involved in crimes against women. Out of which a case related to rape (IPC Section-376) is registered. While the other candidate has a case related to ‘attempt to murder’ (IPC Section-307).

52 out of 92 candidates are crorepatis

Two of the 22 constituencies are ‘red alert’ constituencies, which means three or more contesting candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves. The report states that out of 92 candidates, 52 (57 per cent) are crorepatis. The average assets of each candidate contesting in the second phase of elections is Rs 2.61 crore. Significantly, the assembly elections in Manipur are proposed on February 27 and March 3. All the parties are busy in full swing for the upcoming elections. The 2017 assembly elections in the state were held in a single phase. In these elections, Congress got 28 seats, BJP 21, NPF 4, NPP 4, LJP 1, Trinamool 1 and Independent 1 seat. However, after the election, the NDA coalition government was formed under the leadership of BJP. Because in this NPF, NPP and LJP had come in a supporting role.
