Election 2023. Meghalaya election has started. The term is ending on March 15 in the state. Voting will be held here on February 27 and counting of votes will take place on March 2. All parties have placed bets in the electoral fray.
What will happen to BJP in Meghalaya?
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has single-handedly announced to field candidates for all 60 seats in Meghalaya’s electoral fray. Talking to reporters, Bharatiya Janata Party secretary and Northeast co-incharge Rituraj Sinha has said that the party will contest elections in Meghalaya under the campaign tagline ‘M-Power’ i.e. ‘Modi Shakti’.
Along with this, Rituraj Sinha also said that the people of the northeastern states are fed up with corruption and the slow pace of development. Although the schemes of the central government have reached them, still there is a need for better development. PM Modi has visited the Northeast region more than 50 times during his tenure. Which is more than the total visits of all the previous Prime Ministers.
2018 results
Take a look at the results of the last assembly elections, in the year 2018 elections were held on 59 seats. Congress got the maximum number of seats. Congress got a total of 21 seats here. While BJP could get only 2 seats. The second largest party in the state became – NPP i.e. National People’s Party which got 19 seats. There are some other regional parties in the state like NPP – in which UDP could get 6 seats. Others got 11 seats in their account.
BJP’s condition
This time in Meghalaya, apart from BJP, NPP is also contesting separately on all the seats. But like the last time, due to the activism of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the way the two parties could form an alliance in power, can it be repeated in 2023 as well? This is an important question. With both the parties contesting on all the seats separately, the political battle has intensified here.
importance of regional parties
Apart from Congress, BJP has also existed in Meghalaya, but this state is especially known for regional parties. Apart from NPP and UDP, PDF, HSPDP, GNC, NESDP etc. also have their dominance here. But NPP has made a significant impact.
NPP has hope
For the upcoming assembly elections in Meghalaya, the National People’s Party has already announced to field its candidates on all the seats. Recently, during a meeting in Shillong, Conrad Sangma had said that the strength of NPP has already increased in the state. The result of this is that leaders of many parties have come to his party. Party leaders are full of confidence.
BJP’s claims
Like the NPP, the BJP has also claimed to have a strong mass base. BJP believes that many leaders of NPP and TMC have come under their wing. The party thinks that BJP will get more success in Garo Hills than other parties. The BJP wants to capitalize on Prime Minister Modi’s visit, the schemes of the central government as well as local issues in the elections.
Clash with BJP
Despite getting two seats, in the year 2018, BJP along with regional parties formed the government here. But this time that path is not looking easy. Because the manner in which there was a dispute between Marak and Conrad Sangma in Garo Hills in the past, the sword has been drawn between the two parties.
