Addressing a function here to mark the 200th year of the ‘coronation’ of Maharaja Gulab Singh, Singh said that the delimitation (Delimitation Commission) was completed recently, after which the total number of seats has increased to 90 with 47 seats in Kashmir and 43 in Jammu.
Defense Minister on a two-day visit to the Union Territory (Rajnath Singh) said, ‘There is a possibility of assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir by the end of this year.’ Two days after the Election Commission announced the start of revision of voter list in the Union Territory and preparation of draft voter list by August 31, a deadline has been indicated for the elections. According to officials, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar and Election Commissioner Anoop Chandra Pandey reviewed and directed the Chief Electoral Officer of Jammu and Kashmir to prepare a map of the reconstructed assembly constituencies.
Will be given a chance to change the voter list
During the review process, citizens will be given an opportunity to enter, delete and change their details in the voter list. Last month, the central government issued a notification saying that the order of the Delimitation Commission will come into effect from May 20. The commission, while redrawing the template of constituencies, provided six additional assembly seats to the Jammu division and one seat to Kashmir.
Elections will be held on 90 assembly seats
As per the orders of the Delimitation Commission established under the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act, 2019, the Union Territory will have 90 assembly constituencies. Of these, there will be 43 assembly constituencies in Jammu division and 47 in Kashmir, out of which 9 seats will be reserved for Scheduled Tribes. There were 87 seats when Jammu and Kashmir was a state. Of these, there were 46 seats in Kashmir, 37 in Jammu and four in Ladakh. During the reorganization of the state, Ladakh was declared a separate union territory, where there is no provision of legislature.
