The Ellis Bridge assembly seat in Ahmedabad has been continuously occupied by the BJP for the last 27 years. The BJP has never lost an election on this seat since 1995.

Congress has not been able to register victory in the Ellis Bridge assembly seat in Ahmedabad since 1972.
How the assembly got its name ‘Ellis Bridge’
Ellis Bridge is an assembly constituency in Ahmedabad. The name of this seat is derived from the historical bridge built during the British era. This bridge has been built on the Sabarmati river. At the same time, Gujarat College is the oldest college in the state in this assembly constituency, which was established in 1879. Voting in this assembly seat of Gujarat is not affected on the basis of caste equation but on the basis of religious equation. Most of the Hindu voters live in this area, in which Shah, Brahmin, Patel have the largest number of voters. There are also Muslim voters in some areas.
Here Congress is waiting for victory for 50 years
The Congress had won the Ellis Bridge assembly seat in the initial round. After the formation of Gujarat, elections were held for the first time in 1962. In that period, Congress candidate Indumati Chimanlal had won this seat. In the assembly elections held in 1967, independent candidate RK Patel won this seat. In 1972, this seat again went to the account of Congress and Hariprasad Vyas won from here. After this victory of 1972, till date, the Congress has failed to register victory on this seat. From 1972 to 1995, many other parties have won this seat.
BJP occupied Ellis Bridge for 27 years
The Ellis Bridge assembly seat in Ahmedabad has been continuously occupied by the BJP for the last 27 years. The BJP has never lost an election on this seat since 1995. For the first time this seat was won by BJP leader Haren Pandya in 1995. After this, in 1998, he was elected MLA for the second time. In 2002, he was not given a ticket due to Keshubhai Patel’s faction. Then it seemed that BJP’s hold on the seat would weaken, but it did not happen. In 2017 also BJP candidate Rakesh Shah won. He won this seat by more than 85,000 votes. The social equation of this seat has been in favor of BJP since 2002 because the people here have also suffered the heat of Gujarat riots. For this reason, most of the Hindu voters here prefer BJP.
