Marxist Communist Party (CPI -M) MP K.K. Radhakrishnan said on Tuesday that after the walkout of BJP MPs in protest against the decision to listen to social activist Medha Patkar, the sudden abolition of the meeting of the Parliamentary Committee, weakens the parliamentary consideration and the spirit of democratic counseling.
The meeting of the Standing Committee on Rural Development and Panchayati Raj was canceled because the BJP MPs opposed the committee's decision to listen to Megha Patkar.
Accused of working against development
Megha Patkar led the protest against increasing the height of Sardar Sarovar Dam in Gujarat and the ruling party has accused him of working against the development interests of the country in the name of public and environmental reasons.
BJP MPs walked out
The committee headed by Congress MP Saptagiri Shankar Ulaka called Megha Patkar in 2013 to know the implementation and effectiveness of the Land Acquisition Act passed by Parliament during the Congress -led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government. Along with former Union Minister and BJP MP Purushottam Rupala, other MPs of his party also got out of the meeting, some of whom called Megha Patkar as 'anti -national'.
The incident raises serious questions
A BJP MP questioned whether the leaders of Pakistan can also be called in such a meeting. Radhakrishnan, a CPI (M) leader in the Lok Sabha and a member of the committee, said that this incident raises serious questions. He said that the abolition of the meeting of the Parliamentary Committee suddenly weakens the spirit of parliamentary consideration and democratic counseling.
