Hallmarking is mandatory on gold jewelery in India. In the year 2021, the government had made hallmarking of gold jewelery mandatory in India. Two decades before this, hallmarking of gold was started in India on a voluntary basis. But even now fake hallmark gold jewelery is being sold indiscriminately in the market. The government is preparing to put a stop to this, because it is causing loss to the common people, and secondly, the government is also facing loss of revenue.
The Bureau of Indian Standards ie BIS is the designated authority to implement the hallmarking of gold jewellery. The move is expected to bring transparency in the jewelery trade and increase confidence among customers.
today’s big news
What is Hallmarking?
It is a quality certificate issued by BIS, in which the purity of gold in any jewelery is guaranteed. The certificate is issued to all registered jewelers on the basis of purity test at certified centres. Hallmarking is allowed on 14, 18 and 22 carat gold jewellery.
The process of making hallmarking mandatory in India was implemented in a phased manner. Initially, it was implemented in 256 districts. Under the hallmarking scheme of BIS, a jeweler has to register to sell hallmarked jewellery. BIS is the authorizing authority for testing and hallmarking centres. BIS Regulations were implemented from 14 June 2018. But now they have been made mandatory.
Why is hallmarking important?
With the help of hallmarking, the customer or the buyer of jewelery can make the right choice and avoid any hassle while buying gold. This increases people’s confidence in buying gold. According to the government, hallmarking of jewelery or artefacts enhances the credibility of the offered gold and also provides customer satisfaction.
At the same time, the government is keeping an eye on the market of fake hallmarked gold jewellery. At the same time, many shopkeepers, Hallmark Federation and other market organizations have also complained about this to the government. Now there is a delay on the part of the government in bringing rules to ban this.
