The price of petrol and diesel has remained stable for 8 months in the four major metros of the country. In Delhi, one liter of petrol is priced at Rs 96.72, diesel costs Rs 89.62 per litre. Petrol is being sold at Rs 106.31 per liter in Mumbai, while diesel is being sold at Rs 94.27 per litre. The last nationwide change in fuel prices was on May 21 last year, when the central government cut excise duty on petrol by Rs 8 per liter and on diesel by Rs 6 per litre. After that many states have changed the rates of VAT.
Diesel VAT was increased in Himachal
On January 8, the Himachal Pradesh government increased VAT on diesel by Rs 3 per litre. In fact, the fuel price varies from state to state depending on various parameters like VAT, freight charges, local taxes etc. Public sector OMCs including Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) revise prices daily in line with international benchmark prices and foreign exchange rates.
