An important announcement was made in the last budget regarding the e-shram portal. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, in her budget speech on 1 February 2021, said that she proposes to launch a portal to take forward her efforts to reach the unorganized sector and especially the young workers. He further said in the budget speech that this portal will collect relevant services on gig, building and construction workers etc.

Sitharaman had said that this would help in shaping health, housing, skills, insurance, credit and food schemes for migrant laborers. Under this announcement, the e-Shram portal was launched on 26 August 2021. According to the government, till December 27, 2021, more than 15 crore unorganized workers have been registered on this portal. It is a national database of unorganized workers, which has been linked with Aadhaar. This is the first ever national database of unorganized workers.
The target is to bring more than 38 crore workers working in the unorganized sector under its ambit. These will include construction workers, migrant workers, gig and platform workers, street vendors, domestic helpers, agricultural laborers and other types of workers working in the unorganized sector. It covers 30 sectors and more than 400 businesses.
How can I register?
Let us tell you that a worker of the unorganized sector working in any corner of the country can register on the e-Shramik portal. Three options are available for registration, out of which first is self registration, second is Common Service Center and third is State Service Center. By the way, you can also register yourself on the portal by going online.
But if you do not want to register yourself, then go to the Common Service Center. According to the released data, maximum number of workers have got themselves registered by going to the Common Service Center, followed by self-registration. At the same time, very few people have got registered by visiting the State Service Center.
