Rajesh Kumar, executive of Udyogini, an organization working with farmers in the field of lac cultivation in Jharkhand, says that Jharkhand has immense potential for lac cultivation, especially rural women living in forest areas are benefiting greatly from it. Because there is no means of employment in these areas, due to this women had to migrate for employment. But due to this, after the promotion of lacquer production in the state, migration has come down. Along with this, it is said that there is no better system of irrigation in forest areas and farmers also lack awareness, so lac cultivation is a good option for them.
Women make lacquer bangles
Talking about the cultivation of lacquer, it is mainly cultivated by plum and safflower trees. Plum and safflower trees are found in abundance in the forests of Jharkhand. Apart from this, farmers can also cultivate lacquer on Semialata plants. The quality of the lacquer from the safflower tree is the best. In Jharkhand’s Khunti and Gumla districts, women are not only cultivating lacquer with the help of NGOs, but also processing it and adding value to it. Women make lacquer bangles and sell it in fairs organized in different parts of the country. Due to this their income has also increased. Women are also given training for this.
Women earning lakhs of rupees
It is worth noting that Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren had talked about giving agricultural status to lacquer production a year ago and said that MSP of lac will also be fixed. After this, the income of women farmers here will increase further. At present, women farmers of the state are earning from one lakh to three lakh rupees through lac cultivation. This brings prosperity in their life. The economy is getting stronger in the villages.
