The bill to stop forced conversions in Uttarakhand has been approved by the Governor. With this, the way has been cleared for strict action against forced conversions in the state. This bill will take the form of law after the formal notification is issued by the government. With this, forced conversion in the state will now come under the category of crime.
With the approval of the Raj Bhavan, the Bill has been sent to the Law Department. After this, further proceedings are being started. Its copies will be published from the government press and the old law will be changed.
The government had brought this bill in the winter session of the Vidhansabha.
Raj Bhavan reached after the bill was passed in the assembly
There was a long standing demand in the state for strict action against forced conversions. After which the Uttarakhand government introduced the Uttarakhand Religion Freedom Amendment Bill in the Assembly on 29 November. The bill was passed the next day after it was introduced. After which it was sent to the governor for approval.
Offenders under this law can be punished for up to 10 years
In the Uttarakhand Religion Freedom (Amendment) Bill-2022, a strict provision of punishment of up to 10 years has been made for the culprits of forced conversion. Making conversion against law a cognizable and non-bailable offense in the bill, there is a provision of imprisonment for a minimum of three years to a maximum of 10 years for its culprit. Apart from this, a provision has also been made for a fine of at least Rs 50,000 if found guilty under this. Under the bill, the person who commits the crime may have to pay a compensation amount of at least five lakh rupees, which will be payable to the victim.
