User charges will be levied at many stations in the country (indicative picture)

Preparations have started to make some stations of the country world class. The same facilities will be given to the passengers at these stations as facilities are provided at the airports. To get these facilities, passengers will have to pay some fee, which has been named as user charge. For this, the government will select the stations in a phased manner and they will be developed accordingly.

According to some media reports, the stations that can be selected in the initial phase may include stations like New Delhi, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Bhopal. The stations will be selected according to the number of passengers arriving on the platform. Maintenance of basic facilities is usually a big challenge at crowded stations. Despite all the challenges, to maintain these facilities, the government is trying to develop the stations. User charges will be part of the same.

what is the offer

Under the Station Development Plan, the stations are to be made of world class quality. But its cost will go from the pocket of the passengers and will have to be paid as user charge. For this, whatever A and A1 ranking stations are there in the country, they will be selected first and will be equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. In many media reports, this information has been given by quoting sources. Its notification may be issued soon by the government. This user charge can range from Rs 5 to Rs 50. However, different user charge figures are coming in this. A PTI report last year quoted sources as saying that the user charges could be as high as Rs 10-35 and the fee could be levied on tickets only.

Fee will be charged according to class

New information is coming out that user charges can be levied on tickets of different classes of railways like sleeper, AC, etc. There is no proposal to keep unreserved class in the category of user charge. Lounges and waiting rooms located at stations will be given facilities like airports. This work will be applicable for big stations and stations with star rating and initially these stations will be redeveloped. The user fee will be part of the railway ticket of the passengers. In this, two stations of Delhi like New Delhi and Anand Vihar can come. Apart from this, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj railway station of Mumbai and Habibganj station of Bhopal can fall in this category.

awaiting approval from the government

This proposal is waiting for approval long ago because it can be implemented by the Railways after getting the green signal from the cabinet. According to the information received from the sources, the user fee for AC first class passengers will be higher. Railways has made it clear long ago that this fee will be collected at those stations which are to be redeveloped. There are a total of 7,000 stations in the country, of which 700-1000 stations may fall under the redevelopment category. If this fee is levied, then it will be the first time in the history of railways. Such fees are collected at airports in the form of UDF.

User Fees will be applicable at only a few stations

Railways believes that user fees will be kept normal so that passengers do not feel any additional burden. This fee will be levied on the tickets of those stations where there is more movement of passengers, stations which are more crowded. Right now this proposal has been placed before the government, which is yet to be approved. Fee will be recovered only after the notification is issued by the government. In September last year, the then Railway Board CEO VK Yadav had said that user fees will not be levied at all 7000 stations in the country, but at stations where passengers move more and stations where there may be more congestion in the next 5 years, users will Getting ready to pay fees.
