Unnao rape case: On account of his daughter’s wedding, the Delhi High Court on Monday granted interim bail to former BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, who had been given a life sentence by a trial court for raping a young girl in 2017.
Sengar was granted bail by a division bench of Justices Mukta Gupta and Poonam A Bamba from January 27 to February 10, with the condition that he reports every day to the station house officer in question during that time and provide two sureties totaling Rs 1 lakh each.
In the case contesting the trial court’s December 2019 judgment about the rape conviction and jail term, bail was granted.
Appearing for Sengar, senior advocates N Hariharan and P K Dubey submitted that the wedding rituals and ceremonies would be held in Gorakhpur and Lucknow, and being the only male family member, Sengar had to make the arrangements.
Sengar’s paperwork states that the wedding is scheduled for February 8.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBIattorney, )’s Nikhil Goel, stated that it was discovered that two halls were reserved and that numerous wedding ceremonies were anticipated to take place.
In the previous hearing, Hariharan had argued that Sengar’s daughter’s “tilak” ceremony will take place on January 30 and that her wedding would take place on February 8 of 2023.
The victim’s father, who was allegedly accused and arrested in a case involving illegal arms, passed away in custody a few days later on April 9, 2018, prompting the trial court to sentence Sengar to 10 years of strict incarceration and impose a fine of Rs 10 lakh on March 13, 2020. The trial court had ruled that “no leniency” could be shown for killing the “only breadwinner” of a family.
The former BJP leader’s lawyers suggested that Sengar may be given bail following the provisions of the division bench’s judgment in this second case, which was listed before Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma on Monday. Asking Sengar to provide a copy of the bail plea to the victim’s counsel Mehmood Pracha, the high court listed the matter for hearing on January 19.
