Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Piyush Goyal reviewed the modernization and asset monetization schemes of the Central Warehousing Corporation (CWUC). During this review, Goyal said that CWC should double its storage capacity by the end of 2023 and should have a turnover of Rs 10,000 crore by the financial year 2024-25. Presently CWUC has a storage capacity of 125 LMT.
In this review meeting, Goyal said that tariff rationalization and construction of warehouses should be done independently by the CWC without any bureaucratic interference. He further said that the maximum decision-making powers should be handed over to the CWC.
Construction of underground rooms
At the same time, the Minister also asked the CWC to focus on building cold storage chains in the country on a priority basis. In addition, he instructed the CWC to conduct safety audits for fire, earthquake and accidents on a regular basis in all its warehouses.
He also said that CWC should build underground rooms for the storage of wheat and rice all over the country, so that more and more grains can be stored for more time in the country. At the same time, Goyal said that the CWC should work with NAFED to build more cold storage chains for storing onions, potatoes and tomatoes.
Create a clean environment in CWC storage
The minister further suggested that CWC should prepare a masterplan for all its 423 warehouses. The CWC should analyze the difference between warehouse / storage for agricultural produce and plan accordingly with the help of architects and experts.
The minister further said that CWC should work in mission mode to take care of all stakeholders i.e. employees, customers, personnel and truck drivers. He said that all CWC storage must have modern and comfortable facilities in clean and hygienic environment such as toilets, adequate waiting room, worker-sheds, drinking water facilities and other basic facilities for male and female workers, customers, drivers and the differently-abled. .
