Raisins being made from 28 percent grapes
Usually grapes are cultivated for fresh fruits, but considering the many problems and market system, farmers are now turning to its processing. In today’s time, raisins are being made from 28 percent of the total grape production, due to which the farmers are getting good profits.
If we look at the figures, in the year 2018-19, 110 thousand tonnes of grapes were exported to different countries. The farmers associated with the cultivation of grapes face many problems. Untimely rains and falling prices in the market bring a line of worry on the forehead. For this reason, farmers have found a settled way of processing.
Pradeep Patil, a farmer living in Sangli district of Maharashtra, while talking to the DD farmer, says that our area is less waterlogged. Compared to other crops, grapes are more profitable crop in least water. Patil says that earlier we used to supply grapes to the markets of the country itself.
Can you store raisins for a long time?
He says that there were many difficulties in supplying grapes to the local markets. That’s why we decided to make raisins. Now the farmers here are cultivating those varieties of grapes, from which good raisins can be made.
Farmers making raisins from grapes have the advantage that they can keep it for more than a year. Another farmer Nitin Jadhav says that we store raisins and sell them when the price increases in the market, this increases our income. In today’s time, farmers of Sangli and Solapur districts of Maharashtra are cultivating grapes only to make raisins.
