Farmers say that apart from the problems in selling moong, the paperwork is also causing problems. Farmers told that land records are being sought for selling the produce at MSP in the mandis. At the same time, the limit has been fixed to buy moong crop grown in 5 acres from a farmer. Farmers are against this limit. They demand that the government should increase it. Farmers’ organizations say that the government is emphasizing on the cultivation of moong, but if there is a problem in procurement, then farmers will avoid farming. The government should immediately solve the problem of procurement.
In order to promote crop diversification in the state, the Bhagwant Mann government of Punjab had announced that this time moong would be procured at MSP. After this announcement, the area under moong in the state has increased from 50 thousand acres last year to 1 lakh acres. The state government says that by purchasing moong at MSP, farmers will get an additional income of Rs 36,000 per acre.
