Sometimes senior citizens are not able to get layer berths. Now the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has told the rules to the passengers regarding this.
How seats are allotted in Indian Railways
During ticket booking in Indian Railways, it is our endeavor that the elderly get a lower berth. But many times senior citizens are not able to get layer berth. Now the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has recently told the rules regarding this. Most of the people use IRCTC for booking tickets to travel by Indian Railways. Recently, a Twitter user tagged Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav on Twitter and asked the question, on what basis do you decide the seats for the passengers.
Twitter user wrote – I had booked ticket for 3 senior citizens with the preference of lower berth. 102 berths were available, yet middle, upper and side lower berths were allotted to me.
What is the answer given by IRCTC
IRCTC tweeted that the lower berth quota for senior citizens is only for men of 60 years of age and above. Lower berths are also prescribed for women of 45 years of age and above. But this happens in the case when alone or two passengers travel together. Means travel on a single ticket under the rules. If there are more than two senior citizens or one senior citizen and the other passenger is not a senior citizen, then the seats below are not allotted under this rule.
@IRCTCofficial what logic do you run for seat allocation, I had booked tickets for 3 senior citizens with preference of lower berth , there are 102 berths available, yet allocated berths are middle, upper and side lower. U need to correct same.@AshwiniVaishnaw

Railways allot seats based on the number of senior passengers. Therefore, if you keep this rule in mind while booking your ticket further, you will easily get the desired seat.
Senior citizens are not getting discount on tickets
Meanwhile, in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak last year, the Indian Railways has stopped the concession on tickets for different categories of people, including senior citizens, to prevent unnecessary travel. On behalf of the Indian Railways, it was said that the concessions on the tickets of senior citizens have been withdrawn. Because the danger of COVID is most to the elderly.
