two days strike against privatization of public sector banks
Bank unions under the aegis of United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) have called for a strike on December 16 and 17 against the proposal for privatization of public sector banks in the budget for 2021-22. In the budget, the government had announced the privatization of two public sector banks. According to media reports, about 9 lakh employees of more than 4 thousand branches will not work in this strike, which will last for two days.
Regarding this strike against the privatization of public sector banks, a UFBU official said that the central government is coming up with such a law in the current winter session, which will allow privatization of any public sector bank easily. The official said that bank employees will suffer the most due to privatization of banks. This is the reason why bank unions will be on strike on Thursday and Friday in protest against this decision of the government.
Banks appealed to the employees to withdraw the strike
Several public sector banks, including State Bank of India (SBI), have urged unions to reconsider their decision to go on a two-day nationwide strike. Banks have called unions for talks. Apart from this, almost all the public sector banks in the country have appealed to their employees not to participate in this strike and focus on their work.
State Bank of India, the country’s largest bank, in a tweet has urged its employees to reconsider this decision and refrain from participating in the strike. Indian Bank tweeted, “In order to ensure uninterrupted services to our customers, we have invited leaders of major unions/unions for discussion and appealed to them to call off the proposed strike on 16th and 17th December, 2021.” ‘
