The latest case has been registered on the basis of the statement of Sandeep Nair, an accused in the smuggling case, in which he alleged that he was pressurized to implicate the state government and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
A fresh case has been registered against the Enforcement Directorate (ED) amid the ongoing tussle between the Center and the Kerala Government over the Gold Smuggling Case. This case is the third case filed against the central agency.
The latest case has been registered on the basis of the statement of Sandeep Nair, an accused in the smuggling case, in which he alleged that he was pressurized to implicate the state government and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. It is known that Nair is under custody under COFEPOSA (Protection of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities) Act.
The ED approached the High Court on Monday to quash the FIR lodged against its officials. In its petition, the ED said that its officials were scared. The ED said it was a ploy to weaken the investigation.
The case of smuggling of gold came to light in July last year. Swapna Suresh, a former employee of the UAE consulate, is the main accused along with two others in the recovery of 30 kg of gold worth Rs 14.82 crore in diplomatic baggage from air cargo at the international airport here. Some officers who helped the accused in this case were also arrested.
At the same time, the Kerala government has requested the High Court to dismiss the petition of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on behalf of the police for forcing the main accused in the gold smuggling case, Swapna Suresh, to make a statement against Chief Minister P. Vijayan. An appeal has been made to cancel the FIR lodged against the ED officials.
The ED, in a petition filed on 23 March, had alleged that it had a secret motive to derail the statutory investigation under Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) of a large-scale economic crime in the case of smuggling large amounts of gold. An FIR has been registered against the officials.
According to the FIR lodged against the ED officials, ED officials probing the gold smuggling case interrogated Suresh on 12-13 August 2020, forcing him to make a statement against the Chief Minister of the state for forgery. Evidence can be fabricated.
