West Bengal (West Bengal) as well as the Border Security Force in Punjab and Assam (BSF) has been opposed by the opposition to increase the jurisdiction. The Government of West Bengal called it the Government of West Bengal (West Bengal GovernmentDescribing the move as an “irrational decision”, West Bengal called it a “direct attack on federalism”, while West Bengal, leader of opposition and senior BJP leader Shubhendu Adhikari (Suvendu AdhikariWelcoming this, said that this will help in curbing drug smuggling and cow smuggling on the border.
Let us tell you that according to the notification of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the area of BSF in these three states will be within 50 kilometers from the international border. Earlier this range was 15 kms. BSF officers can conduct searches, seizures and arrests just like the police. BSF officials say that this will now help them to rein in the infiltrators.
Infiltrators and smuggling will be curbed
I Congratulate Hon’ble Home Minister of India Shri @AmitShah ji for this Gazette Notification.

Shubhendu Adhikari tweeted, “I congratulate the Honorable Home Minister of India Amit Shah ji. It is hoped that the strengthening of the West Bengal border will put an end to the free flowing illicit trade of narcotics and cow smuggling and smuggling, which is operating under the patronage of the ruling party of West Bengal and the police.”
Minister Firhad Hakim and Adhir Chaudhary opposed the decision
The expansion of #BSF area of jurisdiction upto 50 km from border of some states amounts to brazen infringement upon the territory of states.
@HMOIndia , you should not indulge any ‘Chherkhani’ else will face the consequences.

On the other hand, West Bengal’s Transport Minister and Trinamool Congress leader Firhad Hakim said that the central government was “violating the federal structure of the country”. Firhad Hakim said that ‘law and order is a state subject but the central government is trying to intervene through central agencies’. Senior Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury also opposed the central government’s decision to increase the jurisdiction of the BSF. Sources say that after the new changes, it will be easier for them to carry out operations against smuggling of narcotics/weapons in the border areas. An official said, “We can take action on information related to entry and movement of traffickers and infiltrators within 50 km of the border. Now we will not need to coordinate with the state police to go beyond 15 kms.
TMC demands withdrawal of notification
The Trinamool Congress demanded the Center to withdraw it, claiming that the decision was taken without consulting the West Bengal government. Trinamool spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said, “We oppose this decision, it is an encroachment on the rights of the state. What was the immediate need to expand the BSF’s jurisdiction without informing the state government? If the BSF has to conduct searches anywhere, it can always do so in collaboration with the state police. This has been going on for years. It is an attack on the federal structure.” Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy alleged that the BSF’s track record with regard to human rights in border villages is not good. He said, “The Center and Home Minister Amit Shah are trying to weaken the states. The track record of BSF in the matter of human rights in border villages is not good.
