The Supreme Court has given strict orders to the Central Government regarding the oxygen supply in Delhi. The Supreme Court said that the Center will have to supply 700 metric tons of oxygen every day in Delhi. The Supreme Court told the central government that giving oxygen only once will not work. At the same time, the Delhi government said that till 9 am, Delhi has received only 89 metric tons of oxygen, while 16 metric tons is on the way.
During the hearing, Justice Chandrachud said, “You have to give 700 MT of oxygen daily to Delhi. We want the Center to supply Delhi 700, and it is not just my opinion, this bench believes, we will make it clear in the order. “
Justice Chandrachud said, “Please do not force us into a situation where we have to be tough.” Justice Shah said, “We also made it clear yesterday that you will have to supply 700 MT of oxygen daily to Delhi till further orders regarding the oxygen supply comes.”
What was said by the central government
Earlier on Thursday, the central government told the court that on Wednesday, 730 metric tons of medical oxygen has been supplied in Delhi, which is more than the order of 700 metric tons of the Supreme Court. The central government said that there is enough stock of oxygen in the hospitals of Delhi.
The Central Government had on Wednesday approached the Supreme Court against the order of the Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court had also allowed an immediate hearing on the case. In fact, the Delhi High Court had reprimanded the Central Government and asked the officials who supervised the purchase of oxygen and oxygen supply to other states including Delhi to be present during yesterday’s hearing.
Solicitor General (SG) Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Central Government, had said that it is unfortunate that the Delhi High Court has initiated contempt action against the Center at such a time. When the officials of the Center are trying to give their best on this issue. The central government told in the Supreme Court that the demand of Delhi is high and according to that the resources are needed. The Center said that even 500 MT of Oxygen can work in Delhi.
Justice Chandrachud denied this and ordered the supply of 700 MT of medical oxygen in Delhi. Justice Shah commented, ‘This is a national disaster. Due to lack of oxygen, people have died. The court clearly said that Delhi should get 700 MT of oxygen, we will not accept less than that.
