Dominica Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit said that the rights of “Indian citizen” Mehul Choksi will be respected and the court will decide on the further course of action. Fugitive diamond merchant Choksi, wanted in India in the Rs 13,500 crore bank fraud case, had mysteriously disappeared from Antigua and Barbuda. After this, Skerritt made a public statement for the first time since his arrest in Dominica on May 23, saying, “Mehul Choksi’s rights will be respected.”
A local media outlet quoted the prime minister as saying that the court will decide what further action will be taken in relation to Choksi. At the same time, Mehul Choksi has alleged that his ‘friend’ Barbara Jabarika played a key role in his abduction and involved people claiming to be Antigua Police personnel and persons who looked like Indians. Antigua Prime Minister Gaston Browne said that the police had started an investigation after receiving a complaint from Choksi.
Choksi accused these people for his kidnapping
In his complaint to the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda, Choksi has named Jabarika, Narinder Singh and Gurmeet Singh among others as accused. A copy of this complaint is with PTI. Choksi has alleged that he had befriended Jabarika over the past one year and was closely involved in his abduction. According to the complaint, she was abducted by people claiming to be Antigua Police and mercenaries who looked like Indians.
The absconding Choksi is wanted in India in the Rs 13,500 crore bank scam and is undergoing custodial treatment at the Dominica China Friendship Hospital. Choksi claimed that Jabarika lived opposite his residential complex in Jolly Harbor and befriended his employees. Also, she used to go for regular walks with him (Choksi).
