Capsicum is used as a vegetable. In English it is called Capsicum. Capsicum is cultivated in some districts of Maharashtra during the winter season. Capsicum is available in red, green or yellow color in the market. Whatever color capsicum is, it is full of vitamin C, vitamin A and beta carotene. It does not contain calories at all, so it does not increase cholesterol. Along with this, it is also helpful in keeping the weight stable. It is cultivated on a large scale in Pune, Nashik, Satara and Sangli districts of Maharashtra.

Coarse chillies are planted in August and September and are harvested in the months of January and February. Medium to heavy black soil with good drainage is suitable for this crop. The fertile land along the river is also suitable for cultivation. For the cultivation of capsicum, the pH value of the soil should be between 6 to 7.

How to prepare nursery bed

Nursery beds are made by raising about five to six inches from the surface of the ground. In this, management of water drainage is essential. Soil treatment is necessary to make nursery beds free from insects, diseases and weeds. For this, the soil is first plowed thoroughly and soaked with water. After this, it is covered with 80 micron transparent plastic and left for 30-40 days.

Capsicum varieties

California Wonder – A medium sized plant with dark green peppers. The peel of this chili is thick and the fruit does not have any pungency. It is a late maturing variety, yielding 12 to 15 tonnes per hectare.

Arka Mohini – The fruits of this variety are large and dark green in color, with an average weight of 80 to 100 grams. The yield per hectare of this variety is 20 to 25 tonnes.

Time and supervision of transplanting

The nursery site chosen for seedling preparation should be well plowed. After this, make a 3 meter long, 1 meter wide and 15 cm high bed for transplanting and apply well-rotted cow dung. Draw a line 2 cm deep parallel to the width of the plant. Apply 10 gm ferret, 10 gm insecticide to each seedling and sow the seeds. Then cover it with soil and water to ensure good germination of seeds. After 6 to 8 weeks the seed is ready for planting.

Proper use of fertilizers and water

In addition to 15 to 20 tonnes of manure per hectare, 150 kg nitrogen, 150 kg phosphorus and 200 kg potash are required. Out of this, full installment of potash and phosphorus and half installment of nitrogen should be given at the time of sowing. Nitrogen should be given one month after planting and another 50 days after planting.

Capsicum requires a lot of water regularly from planting to early growing. Water flowers and fruits regularly. Water should be given at regular intervals of one week.

disease prevention

Die – In this disease the lower part of the head becomes dry. This disease is caused by a type of Phytophthora.
Remedy – Destroy the diseased plants and apply Bordeaux mixture at the rate of 0.6 percent near the roots of the remaining plants.

Bokadya- This is a viral disease and is transmitted from a diseased plant to a good plant by mites. Due to this disease, the growth of leaves stops. Trees do not flower and income is adversely affected.

Remedy- Diseased plants should be uprooted and destroyed. Spray the plants regularly at 15 days interval at the rate of 1 kg monocrotophos per liter of water.
