Schools have been closed since the morning of May 31, following the killing of teacher Rajni Bala by terrorists at a government school in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Tuesday. After his murder, there is an atmosphere of fear among the government employees of the Hindu community and people are continuously protesting against the target killing. When his colleague teachers talk about Rajni Bala, he is unable to control his tears. The school where Rajni Bala taught has about 100 students from classes 6 to 10 and is located inside a colony in Gopalpora.
Recalling the day of the accident, Saima, a fellow teacher, tells how she was preparing the children for the morning prayer. She was making the children stand in line when she heard some crackers-like sound. They thought that it was a prank of some child and he had brought firecrackers to the school, but it was not so. As soon as he looked back, he found that Rajni had fallen on the ground at some distance from the school building.
Talking to ‘Indian Express’, he told that Rajni Bala was shot in the head. “When I cried out for help, I tied Rajni’s dupatta around her wound in an attempt to stop the bleeding,” she said. Fayaz Ahmed, in-charge of the school also thought that it was the sound of a cracker. He has been performing this responsibility for the last one year in the absence of the headmaster.
He said, ‘When I heard the voice, immediately after this I shouted for help. We picked up Rajni and stopped a car passing through the main road and took her to the hospital. Shahida Maqbool, who has been teaching Rajni Bala for more than 20 years, says, ‘I think her blood is still in me. I have been a teacher for 20 years. She was younger than me but I learned a lot from her.
