Tamil Nadu: Statue of DMK founder Annadurai burnt just before assembly elections, Stalin condemned

In Tamil Nadu, some unknown people set fire to a statue of DMK founder and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister CN Annadurai. DMK chief MK Stalin condemned it.

Just before the assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, a case has been reported to set fire to the statue of CN Annadurai, the founder of DMK and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. DMK chief MK Stalin called it an attempt to incite violence. He also condemned the incident. Tensions have been rising in the district since the matter came to light.

Locals told that in Kallakurichi, some unknown people set fire to the statue of Annadurai, who was the first Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Police are collecting footage from CCTV cameras installed in the area to identify and track the culprits. Members of several political parties made representations to the police, demanding an inquiry into the case and stern action against those responsible.

Annadurai is known as ‘Anna’

A champion of the Dravidian movement, CN Annadurai served as the Chief Minister of Madras from 1967 to 1969. He then became the first Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. He is called ‘Anna’ by followers, CN Annadurai was Karunanidhi of Dravidian emblem and Guru of MG Ramachandran.

DMK chief MK Stalin condemned

Reacting to the incident, DMK chief MK Stalin said that people will punish those who are trying to incite violence in the state of Tamil Nadu. MK Stalin said that the Periyar, Anna, MGR statues are being destroyed in Tamil Nadu. It is shameful that the government is not able to completely ban such incidents.

In September last year, a statue of Dravidian icon Periyar EV Ramasamy was destroyed by miscreants in Trichy district. The statue was painted saffron and decorated with slippers.
