Tamil Nadu’s DMK government on Tuesday passed a resolution in the Assembly to integrate a university named after late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa with Annamalai University, prompting opposition AIADMK to walk out of the house and block the road. The opposition party termed it as an act of political vendetta.
When Higher Education Minister K Ponmudi introduced the bill in the House, AIADMK deputy leaders O Panneerselvam and K P Anbalagan opposed it. Members of the main opposition party got up and left the house. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also supported its ally. AIADMK MLAs led by Panneerselvam sat on a dharna on the road in front of ‘Kalaivanar Arangam’. Later the police removed them from there and kept them in a hall. ‘
The proceedings of the assembly take place in ‘Kalaivanar Arangam’. Talking to reporters, Panneerselvam alleged that the DMK government has taken an act of political vendetta by removing the name of ‘Amma’ Jayalalithaa from the university and affiliating it with Annamalai University.
He said that the credit of many initiatives and achievements in the field of education goes to the late Chief Minister and initiatives like free laptops have increased the Gross Admission Ratio to 50-51 in the state as against 25 per cent at the national level. Taking a jibe at the DMK, he said that when Annamalai University was going through a bad phase, it was Amma’s government that gave life to it.
Demonstration of AIADMK workers at many places
Panneerselvam said that in addition more than 60 colleges dealing with arts, science and law were opened during Jayalalithaa’s tenure as chief minister. He said, “So it was appropriate to name a university after him and our party’s government had done so. Due to political vendetta they don’t want university in his name and hence this is being done. We strongly oppose it.”
AIADMK workers demonstrated at several places including Villupuram, Tiruchirappalli and Ranipet over the issue and raised slogans against the DMK government. The AIADMK government had in September last year bifurcated the Thiruvalluvar University in Vellore and announced a university in the name of former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and a bill for the same was also passed in the Assembly.
