Ruckus over electricity prices in Haryana
There has been a political uproar over the increase in electricity prices in Haryana. Along with the general public, all the opposition parties of Haryana have protested against this decision of the government. According to the rules applicable from April 1, the bills are coming for the first time with the removal of the minimum monthly fee (MMC) by creating 2 new slabs of consumers of domestic electricity category-1 (2 kW load) and category-2 (150 units on 5 kW load). Due to changes in the slab of electricity rates and imposing per kW fixed charge, the bills of consumers increased by 12 to 30 percent. The most hit is the connection holders of five kilowatts.
Earlier every month, the bill was charged according to different slabs from Rs 2.50 to Rs 6.30 per unit on 50 units or more consumption every month. Now 6.50 to 7.50 rupees per unit is being taken from them. On the other hand, power companies have cited an estimated loss of Rs 4520.24 crore in the financial year 2025-26 as the reason for this.
Rates increased for the first time in eight years
According to him, for the first time in eight years, fix charge and electricity rate has been increased by 20 paise per unit. About 78 percent of the total domestic consumers in the state are loaded up to 2 kW. About 16 percent are between 2-5 kW and only 6 percent are more than five kWh loaded. Due to this, there was not much difference in the bill of 78 percent consumers.
Domestic category consumers are divided into 3 categories based on load. The earlier slab 151-250 has now been changed from 151 to 300 units. The second slab 251 to 500 units have now been changed to 301 to 500 units. At the same time, a slab with 501 to 800 will now be considered as a slab above 500 units.
Demonstration and warning of Indian National Lok Dal
Indian National Lok Dal activists demonstrated in Panchkula regarding the decision of the Haryana government. He also demonstrated outside the headquarters Shakti Bhawan of Haryana Electricity Broadcasting Corporation. Party state president Rampal Majra said that the BJP had promised to provide cheap electricity to the public during the election campaign, but after coming to power, this power prices have been increased wildly. If the Haryana government does not withdraw this increase in the coming days, then there will be more strong demonstration.
Power Minister Anil Vij's statement
On this whole matter, Haryana Power Minister Anil Vij said that we never said during the election campaign that we will give free electricity. The opposition is tricking the public by lying on this issue. Anil Vij said that after 10 years, there has been a slight increase in electricity rates. Whereas in these 10 years, the prices of everything from the machinery used to make electricity have increased due to inflation.
