Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday urged the minority community to adopt a “proper family planning policy” for population control with the aim of reducing poverty.
The Chief Minister, on the occasion of the completion of 30 days of his government, said that all stakeholders should come forward and support the government to help reduce poverty in the community. The reason for poverty is uncontrolled growth in population.
He said, “The government is the protector of all poor people but it needs the cooperation of the minority community to deal with the issue of population growth. Population growth is the main reason for poverty, illiteracy and lack of proper family planning.
Sarma said that his government would work towards educating women from the minority community so that the problem could be effectively tackled. He said that the government cannot allow encroachment of temples, sanctuaries and forest lands and the community members have also assured the government that they do not want to encroach on these lands. The Chief Minister requested the community leaders to introspect and motivate the people for population control.
Earlier, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma had said on Monday that encroachers and infiltrators from all parts of Assam would be evicted to protect the Assamese identity. The Chief Minister along with Industries Minister Chandra Mohan Patwari, BJP MLA Dr. Parmanand Rajbhongshi and former MLA Gurujyoti Das visited Sipajhar, Darang.
Sarma tweeted, ‘Today I visited Gorukhuti in Sipajhar, Darang and traveled in a country boat and inspected the encroachment by illegal settlers near Dholpur Shiv Temple in the river area. Under encroachment on the part of illegal occupants in this area, 120 bighas of temple land has been freed by the Assam Police and administration. Such people will be evacuated from all parts of Assam to protect our land and Assamese identity from encroachers and infiltrators.
