The CM said that Sidhu can join the cabinet again and there is a vacancy for him. However, he also made it clear that Sidhu cannot be made the PCC chief.
Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh and former state minister Navjot Singh Sidhu.
Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh told the Congress Committee in Delhi that Navjot Singh Sidhu cannot be made the Deputy Chief Minister or the head of the State Congress Committee. Sources said that Singh is preparing to field the party under his leadership. Sources quoted Singh as saying that making Sidhu the deputy CM or the head of the Congress committee could completely spoil the leadership equation in the state unit.
According to sources, the CM has said that Sidhu may rejoin the cabinet and there is a vacancy for him. However, he also made it clear that Sidhu cannot be made the PCC chief as there are many other senior leaders in the party unit who are more qualified than him for the post. Another source said that CM Singh has asked the committee to rein in leaders like Sidhu and Pratap Singh Bajwa as they are acting like opposition parties in Punjab these days.
‘Sidhu walking on the rebel path by speaking against the government’
Sources also say that Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has already conveyed his stand to the high command that giving the responsibility of the post of Deputy Chief Minister and President of State Congress Committee to Sikh will not go a good sign because the Chief Minister himself is from this society and The Hindu community is also to be represented. Amarinder Singh also told the committee that Sidhu was already following a rebellious path by making statements against the government.
Other Congress leaders who appeared before the committee also said Sidhu was not fit for any of these top posts (deputy CM or PCC chief). However, at least two of them said that the high command was keen to hand over the responsibility of an important post to Sidhu, especially in the election campaign as the high command does not want him to join the Aam Aadmi Party.
Preparation for solving social equation in the next election
Significantly, in the recent few weeks, there has been a heated rhetoric between Chief Minister Amarinder Singh and party leader Navjot Singh Sidhu. MLA Pargat Singh and some other leaders of the State Congress Committee have also opened a front against the Chief Minister. If Congress sources are to be believed, the members of the committee may suggest some formula to the high command in their report, whose purpose may be to give important responsibility to Sidhu in the government or organization and also to cultivate social equation.
For the last few months, there has been a discussion that Sidhu wants the role of Deputy Chief Minister in the government or the President of the State Congress Committee in the organization, although it has been repeatedly said from the former cricketer that he is not for the post. Rather, we talk about the rights of Punjab and Punjabis. There are speculations that the Congress high command may consider giving important responsibility to Sidhu as well as giving important responsibility to a leader of the Dalit (Hindu) community in the government so that the social equation can be settled in the next elections.
