Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Friday launched a Rs 520 crore loan waiver scheme for 2.85 lakh agricultural laborers and landless farmers of the state on the occasion of the 77th birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. He said that his government has decided to waive off loans of Rs 520 crore in respect of principal amount of cooperative loans of agricultural laborers and landless farmers by July 31, 2017.
Along with this, the simple interest on this amount at the rate of 7 percent per annum has also been waived till March 6, 2019. The state government had earlier waived off Rs 4,700 crore (up to Rs 2 lakh of each crop loan) for 5.85 lakh small and marginal farmers under the loan waiver scheme.

According to an official release, on the occasion, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh said that he is dedicating this scheme to the state on the 77th birth anniversary of his close friend Rajiv Gandhi. He said that I hope that a day will come when India will be free from poverty, which Rajiv Gandhi used to dream.
