Gopalkrishna Gandhi turns down offer to become Presidential candidate
Gopalkrishna Gandhi said in a statement that he was appreciative of being considered for the top post. He believes that the opposition should choose a candidate who promotes national consensus and that there are others who can accomplish this better than them. The former Bengal governor made his remarks in the wake of rumors that Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar and National Conference (NC) leader Farooq Abdullah turned down the opportunity. As the presidential election draws near, the opposition is likely to gather on Tuesday to discuss it.
Proposal to make former union minister Yashwant Sinha candidate
Gopalkrishna Gandhi said that after going through the proposal carefully, he requested the opposition to elect a candidate who would bring unity among these parties. He wrote, “May India get a President who is qualified to be succeeded by Rajaji as the last Governor-General and the post Dr Rajendra Prasad has served as our first President.” On the other hand, preparations are now being made to present Yashwant Sinha as the presidential candidate. Yashwant Sinha is currently in TMC and is considered a staunch opponent. TMC sources say that leaders of many political parties have agreed on Yashwant Sinha’s name during talks with Mamata Banerjee. However, the final decision will be taken only in the meeting of the opposition party.
