Senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Oscar Fernandes passed away at the age of 80. He breathed his last at a hospital in Mangaluru on Monday. He was admitted to the hospital in July. Oscar Fernandes fell while doing yoga. He had suffered a head injury due to which a blood clot had formed in his brain. A surgery was done to remove it.
After hearing the news of his death, many leaders expressed condolences. Expressing grief over his death, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “Saddened by the passing away of Rajya Sabha MP Oscar Fernandes ji. My condolences and prayers are with his family and well wishers in this time of grief. may his soul rest in peace.”
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said, “Saddened by the passing away of Shri Oscar Fernandes, a Rajya Sabha MP and senior Congress leader. Condolences to his family, friends and supporters. Peace!”

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has described his death as a personal loss. He tweeted, “My heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Oscar Fernandes ji. This is a personal loss for me. He was a guide and mentor to many of us in the Congress party. He will be remembered for his contribution.”

Congress leader Randeep Surjewala has also paid tribute to him. He tweeted, “Oscar Fernandes ji was a mentor, mentor, organizational builder. He was associated with the Congress workers and the workers also loved him. A “banyan tree” of the Congress party has fallen. There will hardly be anyone like him. Our heartfelt tribute to the eternal Congressman!”

Congress leader Srinivas Biwi has condoled the death of Fernandes. He tweeted, “Sad to hear about the passing away of former Union Minister and senior Congress leader Oscar Fernandes ji. A man of great wisdom and determination, he was one of the most kind and loyal soldiers of the INC. May God rest the noble soul and give strength to the family to bear this loss.
Oscar Fernandes Journey
Fernandes had served as the Union Road Transport Minister in the UPA government. Fernandes, considered close to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, has also served as the Parliamentary Secretary to Rajiv Gandhi. He was also the chairman of the Central Election Authority of the All India Congress Committee.
Oscar Fernandes was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1980 from the Udupi constituency of Karnataka. He was re-elected to the Lok Sabha in 1984, 1989, 1991 and 1996 from the same constituency. In 1998, Fernandes was elected to the Rajya Sabha and he was re-elected to the Upper House in 2004.
