Leprosy patients getting vaccinated at the COVID Vaccination Camp in Tahirpur.
Swayam Sanstha has started the vaccination campaign of COVID-19 in Tahirpur village near Delhi. Under this, those leprosy patients have to be vaccinated, who do not get help easily. The special thing about this village is that it is the largest village of people suffering from leprosy in India. SWAYAM is an organization established by Sminu Jindal Charitable Trust which works to establish an accessible and respectful environment for people with disabilities.
Together with the local authorities, Swayam carried out a successful campaign to vaccinate all the people living with leprosy living in the colonies of Tahirpur. The campaign was started 3 months back and so far around 900 leprosy residents have been vaccinated against COVID-19. This campaign will continue till all the residents of Tahirpur village want to get vaccinated as per their wish and eligibility.
Due to widespread fear and misconceptions about leprosy, most people do not want to go to leprosy patients. About 5000 families of Tahirpur village have already suffered a lot and now their life has become more difficult due to COVID. 61-year-old Sumai Somen, a resident of Tahirpur, said that despite being near the vaccination center, we could not go there due to our condition. But Swayam Sanstha not only got us registered but also arranged for accessible vehicles to reach the vaccination centre.
Smt. Sminu Jindal, founder and chairperson of SWAYAM, said about the vaccination of leprosy persons, “As India celebrates the 152nd birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, it would be appropriate to repeat some of his touching words here. ‘A society is properly identified by the way it treats the weakest section of its society.’
Indrajit Kumar, secretary of Hari Om Leprosy Ashram, said, ‘Swayam’s coming to help in this way is no less than a blessing for the residents of Tahirpur. Swayam provided accessible vehicles for the leprosy residents so that they could come back to the vaccination center without any hassle.
