The Nagpuri orange variety is known for its wonderful taste. It is mainly grown in Vidarbha. Farmers in western Maharashtra and Marathwada also have scope for orange cultivation. Maharashtra alone accounts for 80 percent of the total orange production in the country. But now agricultural scientists have developed many such improved varieties of oranges, which can be cultivated in other states of the country as well.
Orange is also cultivated in the areas of Sausar and Pandhurna in Chhindwara district of Madhya Pradesh near the Maharashtra border. Nagpur, which is known as the ‘Orange City’, supplies oranges from these two areas of the district. Oranges are low in calories and rich in nutrients. They promote clear, healthy, skin and help reduce our risk for many diseases as part of overall health and a varied diet.
Apart from Maharashtra, farmers in states like Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka also do orange cultivation prominently.
What should be the weather for orange cultivation?
The growth of orange tree is good in temperature from 13 to 37 degree Celsius. This crop requires warm and slightly humid climate. If there is good rainfall and 50 to 53 percent humidity, then the plants grow well and the production is high.
What kind of land should be for orange cultivation?
Black soil is considered suitable for the cultivation of oranges. Farmers should keep in mind that a field with good drainage is suitable for cultivation of oranges. Orange production is good even in sandy loamy soil. For the cultivation of oranges, the pH value of the soil should be from 5.5 to 7.5.
