In Odisha, 816 prisoners have been infected with Coronavirus in the month of May. In view of the increasing infection in jails, 658 prisoners have been shifted from overcrowded jails till May 26 with the permission of lower courts.
Coronavirus is spreading very fast among the prisoners lodged in the jails of Odisha. Gunupur Sub-Jail Superintendent Kamakshya Prasad Pati said that out of 113 inmates of Gunupur sub-jail in Rayagada district, 70 prisoners and five employees have been infected with the powder. He told that after the report of these prisoners and employees came positive, other prisoners have been kept separate from them. Along with this, the jail premises were also sanitized.
According to the recently released data by the State Prison Headquarters, in the month of May, 816 prisoners have been infected with Corona in the state. In view of the increasing infection in jails, 658 prisoners have been shifted from overcrowded jails till May 26 with the permission of lower courts. On the other hand, keeping in mind the preparedness to deal with the current situation of Corona in jails, the Directorate General of Prisons and Correctional Services (DCS), Odisha, has decided to take several measures including appointment of a nodal officer for all the jails.
During the pandemic, a large number of prisoners were granted bail and parole last year to control overcrowding in many jails of the country and many of them have not returned yet. The officials have ordered that all precautionary measures should be taken and the prisoners who are lodged in the jails should be tested for corona every day. Along with this, the meetings in the jail have also been stopped. The jail administration had recently banned the meeting of prisoners with family members.

However, in Odisha too, the pace of infection seems to be decreasing. After 41 days, once again the Daily Test Positivity Rate (TPR) of Odisha has been recorded below 10 percent. In the last 24 hours, 6,118 new cases of corona infection were reported in the state and 41 deaths occurred. At the same time, 7,358 people have also been cured of these diseases on the last day. At present there are 76,750 active cases in the state. With this, the number of infection cases in the state has increased to 8,19,214 and so far 3,035 people have died due to corona. So far 7,39,376 people have been cured in Odisha. To break the chain of infection, the state government has extended the lockdown till June 17.
