On Saturday, some BJP MLAs allegedly threw slippers, earphones and papers towards the Speaker’s seat in the Odisha Legislative Assembly. This incident happened when the House passed the Odisha Lokayukta (Amendment) Bill in a hurry within a few minutes without discussion. Assembly Speaker SN Patro had earlier rejected the Congress notice to discuss the alleged corruption in mining activities.
Two senior BJP MLAs JN Mishra and BC Sethi were seen standing in their respective seats and throwing some material towards the Speaker’s seat. Things thrown from his side included slippers, paper, pens, dustbin and earphones. However, slippers and other items did not reach the pedestal. While Sethi denied the charge of throwing slippers towards the Speaker’s seat, JN Mishra said that I do not know exactly what I had thrown, but he (the Speaker) deserves similar behavior. They do not work in a democratic way.
Congress condemned the incident
The government’s chief whip Pramila Mallick alleged that BJP MLAs JN Mishra, BC Sethi threw slippers and earphones, while party whip Mohan Majhi threw earphones. He said that BJP MLAs are doing this only to remain in the news. The chairman said that I am investigating the incident. The law will work on its own. Congress Legislature Party leader Narsingh Mishra condemned the incident and termed it unfortunate. He said that the Congress had given notice to discuss mining activities, but the chairman dismissed it without any reason.
Mishra said that it is also unfortunate that the bills are being passed without discussion in the House. Bills should not be passed at the time of chaos in the House. Sethi said that BJP MLAs were opposing the activities of the Speaker, as they did not allow Leader of Opposition PK Naik to speak in the House. After the incident of throwing slippers, the house was adjourned till the lunch break session.
