The huge Noida International Airport (NIA) in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh, is being built to become one of India’s busiest airports. It is also known as Jewar Airport. When it’s fully up and running, Phase 4 will include:
It is the largest airport in the country, with 6 runways and 4 buildings.
It covered 1,334 hectares in the first part, which cost about ₹4,588 crore, and grew even more in later phases
Timeline and Construction Update
Phase 1 was supposed to be done by September 2024, but that date was pushed back to April 2025, and then it was pushed back again. At this point, it’s planned to open in the middle of 2025.
The domestic terminal is almost done, and the foreign terminal is about 75% done. Important facilities like water and sewage systems are still not finished (about 40%).
Some tests, like in December 2024, have already been done on test fields and with calibration flights.
Running flights and staying connected
In its first phase of operation, NIA will have one runway and one terminal, which will be able to handle about 65 flights per day, including cargo, domestic, and foreign flights.
IndiGo and Akasa Air plan to start with domestic routes. For their first foreign flights, they want to go to Zurich in Switzerland, Dubai in the Middle East, and hubs like Singapore.
Bookings for passengers began in February 2025, and the planned start date for operations was in mid-April 2025. However, that date has now been pushed back.
Design and Connectivity
The airport is conveniently situated 700 m from the Yamuna Motorway, making it easy to get to important places like Delhi, Agra (about a 2-hour drive), Mathura, and Vrindavan.
Plans call for connecting the metro, RRTS, high-speed rail, motorways, and all types of road transportation.
The terminal is being built with local cultural elements in mind, like red sandstone floors, traditional Mughal jali screens, and steps that look like ghats in the forecourt. It will also try to run carbon-neutral.
Impact on the Economy and Size: Phase 1 will cost ₹4,588 crore, and the whole project will cost ₹29,650 crore for 12,355 acres.
From 12 million people a year in Phase 1, to 70 million after the final Phase 4 (by 2020), that’s how much traffic is expected to flow.
The airport has been given a new IATA code, DXN.
Noida’s Jewar Airport is on track to become Delhi NCR’s second major international gateway. This will help ease traffic at IGI and improve connections to important domestic and foreign destinations. There are still delays in building, mostly because of the need to connect utilities and build out infrastructure, but businesses should be able to start up in the middle of 2025. It is one of India’s biggest aviation projects because of its size, phased growth, cultural design, and multimodal transportation links.
