Mustard production in the country has increased by 27.1 percent as compared to last year. Despite this, the price is expected to be higher than the MSP. So far, 46 percent of the crop has arrived in the mandis.
Despite record production of mustard, this year prices have remained high. The price of mustard these days in the country’s largest mustard producer Rajasthan (Mustard Price) is running above the minimum support price by about Rs.2000. Looking at the international situation, experts are expecting the price to continue rising. At present, the MSP of mustard is Rs 5050 per quintal, while its rate is running up to Rs 7,063 in the online market. Its price reached Rs 7,100 per quintal on June 13 in Nagaur Mandi. In the mandis where there is more arrival, the price is less.
In major mustard producing countries Canada and China, production has decreased this year. Mustard production in China declined by 0.4 while in Canada by 35.4 percent. However, production in India is 27.1 percent higher than last year. Last year it got a good price, so the farmers had sown it fiercely. The mustard area had increased by 18 lakh hectares in 2022 as compared to 2021. Due to which production increased. In the year 2020-21, 8.50 million metric tonnes (MMT) of mustard was produced while in 2021-22 it has increased to 10.80 MMT.
why didn’t the price come down
India imports about 55 percent of its edible oil needs. Therefore, despite more production, the price will not come down. It will remain above MSP. Internationally, its production has decreased by 3.3 per cent. The number of people consuming mustard oil has increased as compared to refined. Therefore, its price is expected to remain higher than the MSP. Shankar Thakkar, president of All India Edible Oil Traders Federation, says that the price of mustard is estimated to be Rs 2000 to 2500 more than the MSP.
how much has arrived
Market experts say that so far 5.07 million metric tonnes of mustard has arrived in the current crop year. Which is 46 percent of the total crop. In the coming weeks, farmers can hold their stock in anticipation of a higher price. Because they hope that in the coming days, they will get a better price. On the other hand, the price of 1 liter of mustard oil is currently around Rs 200.
