Officials said that RT-PCR test, social distancing and other corona protocols will be fully followed in Parliament.
According to the data available with the Rajya Sabha Secretariat, at least 179 Rajya Sabha members have been fully vaccinated before the monsoon session of Parliament. Of the 232 members of the Upper House, 77 percent have been fully vaccinated. According to official data available till June 18, 39 more members of the House have received their first dose.
This means that at least 403 members of the Lok Sabha, which is three-fourth (3/4) of the current 540 members, have been given both doses of corona. It is expected that there will be no need to reduce the members in the next month’s session. However, an official said on condition of anonymity that some Members of Parliament (MPs) have not been able to get the second dose of Corona yet, as they were Corona positive.
’30 MPs have yet to answer about the vaccine’
The other 30 MPs have not sent him any reply, the official said. He is constantly trying to contact them to know their vaccination status. Top officials of Parliament said that the RT-PCR test and the rules of social distancing will continue to be part of the protocol in Parliament.
Three MPs died from Corona
The higher rate of vaccination of MPs and Parliament staff improves the chances of longer Parliament sessions and higher productivity. More than 40 bills and five ordinances are pending before Parliament due to Corona. He said that more than 50 MLAs have been affected by COVID-19. At least three MPs, including Minister of State for Railways Suresh Angadi, have died due to COVID.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla had opened a COVID-19 vaccination center in the Parliament premises in March to ensure timely completion of vaccinations of MPs, their families and parliamentary officials. The top official said that vaccination will not be mandatory for MPs to attend Parliament. However, everyone is fully encouraged to get the vaccine.
