Action was to be taken against encroachment in Seelampur area on Wednesday. But due to lack of police force, the municipal squad had to return. Municipal officials on Wednesday launched an anti-encroachment drive in Najafgarh, Dwarka, Lodhi Colony and some other areas of South Delhi. Bulldozers continued to move to remove illegal constructions and the staff and policemen on duty faced strong opposition from the local people at some places. East Delhi Mayor Shyam Sundar Agarwal said that due to paucity of police force in Seelampur, the planned campaign by East Delhi Municipal Corporation could not start on Wednesday. A day earlier, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation had launched a drive to remove illegal temporary buildings and demolish some walls in New Friends Colony. The North Delhi Municipal Corporation had also launched an anti-encroachment drive in the Mangolpuri area.

Temporary structures removed in Dwarka, Chaukhandi and surrounding areas
Corporation officials on Wednesday launched an anti-encroachment drive in south Delhi’s Najafgarh and western areas, removing temporary structures at various places, including Dwarka, Chaukhandi and adjoining areas. The action taken by the corporation was opposed by a section of local residents whose videos also surfaced on social media. In a video, a person in Janakpuri area expressed strong protest saying, we should have been given notice earlier.

The man said, they (anti-encroachment team) will have to pass over our dead bodies. A group of people and some policemen were standing next to him. South Delhi Municipal Corporation’s Western Zone President Shweta Saini said that anti-encroachment drive was also conducted in Janakpuri and Chaukhandi near Tilak Nagar. He said that some local people protested in Janakpuri against the campaign. Saini told PTI-language, despite protests, anti-encroachment drive was carried out. We have only removed temporary buildings and domes. It is our duty to remove encroachments and we will continue to take action against the violators. Meanwhile, various Left organizations took out a march to the Lieutenant Governor’s residence in Delhi to protest against the anti-encroachment drive being carried out by the Bharatiya Janata Party-led municipal corporations.
