Chandrayaan-3: A few hours after the Vikram lander made history on Wednesday night during Chandrayaan-3, India’s third lunar mission, Rakesh Roshan, had one of the top positions on the list of trends. It so happened that Mamata Banerjee accidentally referred to Indian astronaut Rakesh Sharma as Rakesh Roshan in a viral blooper while speaking at a gathering in Kolkata prior to Chandrayaan-3’s moon mission on August 23.

We were young at that time. When Rakesh Roshan (sic) landed on the moon, Indira Gandhi asked him how India looked from there. And they had said, Saare jahaan se achcha, Hindustan hamara,” Mamata Banerjee had said. Rakesh Sharma, a former pilot for the Indian Air Force, became the first Indian to visit space in 1984 as a member of the Soviet Interkosmos mission.

In the meantime, Rakesh Roshan is the topic of conversation on X (formerly known as Twitter). There are a tonne of memes since social media users also used movie stills showing actor Hrithik Roshan’s response to Mamata Banerjee’s gaffe. Launch Vehicle Mark-III (LVM-3) rocket was used to launch Chandrayaan-3, a mission with a cost estimate of Rs 600 crore, on July 14. In 41 days, the mission was supposed to arrive at the lunar south pole. Despite the recent failure of Russia’s Luna-25 spacecraft, it was successful. With its first-ever spacecraft landing close to the south pole of the moon, India wrote history. After a faultless 41-day journey, Chandrayaan-3 landed at 6:04 p.m. on Wednesday on the lunar south pole. After the US, China, and the former Soviet Union, India is now the fourth nation to have mastered the science of soft-landing on the lunar surface thanks to this touchdown on the Moon in its second attempt in four years.
