In Maharashtra, those guilty of throwing acid on daughters and gang-raping and murdering them will now be sentenced to death. In this regard, the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly on Thursday unanimously passed the ‘Shakti Criminal Laws Bill’, which has made stringent provisions for punishment, including death penalty, for crimes against women. Provision has been made in the bill for speedy disposal of such cases and now it will be introduced in the Legislative Council. After the joint committee approved the bill, Home Minister Dilip Valse Patil introduced it in the assembly. The investigation will have to be completed within 30 days
Welcoming this, Leader of Opposition Devendra Fadnavis said that the incidents of atrocities on women are increasing continuously, so there is a need to make the existing laws strict. Under this law, in the case of rape, there is a provision to give death penalty or rigorous imprisonment to the offender. The investigation will have to be completed within 30 days of the information of the crime, if the investigation is not possible in 30 days, then the Inspector General of Police or the Commissioner of Police will get an extension of 30 days.
On Thursday, Minister P Tanpure held the BJP-led government in the Legislative Council responsible for the increase in the arrears of electricity usage of agricultural consumers to Rs 40,000 crore. The minister was speaking to the farmers to clear their dues by the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL). “When the new government (of BJP-Shiv Sena) came to power in Maharashtra in 2014, MSEDCL’s dues on agriculture sector was Rs 10,000 crore. During that time the cumulative figure of arrears (from all electricity consumers) in the entire state was Rs 20,000 crore.
