Due to bumper yield of tomato in Bari area of Raisen, farmers are now forced to throw tomatoes on the road.
Tomato
Roads in Raisen district of Madhya Pradesh are turning red with tomatoes these days. Farmers are forced to throw tomatoes from the fields on the roads. The reason for this is that there has been a bumper tomato yield in Raisen, but due to farmers not getting the right price of tomatoes, tomatoes are being thrown on the streets for animals.
Raisen district is the largest tomato growing region of Madhya Pradesh. Raisen has been declared a tomato district under the Prime Minister’s Micro Food Industry Upgradation Scheme. Farmers in Raisen told that they are getting 40 rupees for 22 kg crate of tomatoes, due to which the cost of the farmers, including seeds and pesticides is not being met. If the price of tomato is not available, the farmers are forced to throw tomatoes so that it can be useful for the animals.
Farmers’ costs are not being recovered
It is worth noting that due to bumper yield of tomato in Bari area of Raisen, farmers are now forced to throw tomatoes on the road. Tomatoes have started rotting in the fields. Farmers who grow tomatoes on many bigha lands have found it difficult to extract seeds, medicines and other expenses this time. Tomatoes were shipped in large quantities in North and South India from Raisen. Due to this, people have started cultivating tomatoes in dozens of acres of land here. Due to bumper yields, tomatoes are not available in mandis here. Farmers have to deal with losses due to selling in the market. They are also finding it difficult to withdraw money for diesel, car and wages.
Market Department extended help
At the same time, farmer Surendra Kumar Tiwari said that for 12 years, tomato farmers have planted tomatoes in 4 acres of land, which has cost about one and a half lakh rupees. The situation is that a crate is being sold for 40 to 50 rupees. Tomato rate was very high at the time of rain. Due to this, farmers of the nearby regions where tomatoes used to be planted planted more crops. The mandi department has tried this time that some farmers are being encouraged under the Pradhan Mantri Micro Food Industry Upgradation Scheme and applications have also come from farmers for setting up processing units.
