Five army personnel including a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) were martyred in three encounters on Monday in different districts of Jammu and Kashmir, while two terrorists were also killed during this period. The officers provided this information. Soldiers were killed in firing by terrorists in a village near Dera Ki Gali (DKG) in Surankote area of the border district of Poonch, he said. The army and police started a joint operation after getting information about the presence of terrorists who crossed the Line of Control (LoC).
Two terrorists were killed and a policeman was injured during encounters in Anantnag and Bandipora districts. A defense spokesperson said in a statement, “On the intervening night of October 10 and 11, an anti-terrorist operation was launched by the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police in Shahdara area near the border of Poonch-Rajouri districts in Jammu and Kashmir. During this operation, the terrorists opened heavy fire on the army personnel, injuring one JCO and four soldiers seriously.
Naib Subedar (JCO) Jaswinder Singh, Naik Mandeep Singh, Sepoy Gajjan Singh, Saraj Singh and Vaishakh H were among the soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice, he said. “The nation will always be indebted to our heroes for their supreme sacrifice and duty,” the spokesperson said.
Officials said that there were reports of heavily armed terrorists crossing the Line of Control and hiding in the Chamer forest. The terrorists fired heavily on the security forces, in which 5 jawans were seriously injured. Later, all five soldiers died during treatment at a nearby military hospital.
All possible escape routes for terrorists closed
He said that after the initial encounter, the terrorists fled to the nearby Bhangai village which comes under Rajouri district. He said that the encounter is on to eliminate the terrorists and all possible escape routes for the terrorists have been closed.
Meanwhile, security forces launched a search operation at Khagund in Verinag area of Anantnag district on receiving information about the presence of terrorists. An official said the search operation turned into an encounter when the terrorists opened fire on the security forces. In retaliation by the security forces, one terrorist was killed, while a policeman was also injured, the official said.
In another encounter that took place in Hajin area of Bandipora district, a Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist was killed. Kashmir’s Inspector General of Police (IG) Vijay Kumar tweeted, “The slain terrorist has been identified as Imtiyaz Ahmed Dar, affiliated with the banned terrorist organization Lashkar. He was involved in the recent civilian killings in Shahgund Bandipora.”
Political parties demonstrated against Pakistan
After the death of five army personnel, Shiv Sena and Dogra Front activists staged an anti-Pakistan protest and burnt an effigy of Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan for aiding and promoting terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir. The Jammu and Kashmir unit of Congress expressed grief over the death of 5 Army personnel and urged the BJP government to take effective steps to stop Pakistan-sponsored terrorism in the Union Territory. In a statement, the party expressed serious concern over the increase in terrorist incidents in Jammu and Kashmir.
Senior BJP leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Kavinder Gupta said in a statement that the terrorists responsible for the death of 5 jawans will be traced and killed soon. He said, “India will respond in a language that Pakistan understands well. Every terrorist who has somehow entered into Indian soil will be killed at the earliest and security forces are already engaged on it.”
