Opportunity to earn from jackfruit cultivation
The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) flagged off the first export consignment of value-added and nutritionally rich products made from jackfruit, passion fruit (salibi fruit) and nutmeg from farmers in Thrissur, Kerala, to Melbourne, Australia. The shelf life of these products is more than one year. APEDA is promoting exports of value added and health products as part of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s target of achieving commodity exports of $400 billion by 2021-22.

In the present times of fast food, consumer preference is now shifting towards health food. Gluten free products prepared from healthy alternatives like jackfruit, passion fruit etc. are providing a viable alternative to fast food consumption.
Jackfruit, originally found in the Western Ghats, was declared the state fruit of Kerala in March 2018. The largest fruit produced from the tree is rich in fiber, protein, vitamins and minerals.
This tropical fruit is popular among vegetarians as a meat substitute due to its protein content. In addition to the use of the fruit, seeds and pulp, jackfruit leaves, bark, inflorescences and latex are also used in traditional medicine.
Due to the increasing awareness about the health and nutritional properties of the fruit and the continuous efforts of the jackfruit farmers and entrepreneurs across the country, it is expected that jackfruit will definitely become the most sought after fruit in the years to come. The major export destinations of jackfruit are Singapore, Nepal, Qatar, Germany etc.

Chance to earn lakhs from jackfruit cultivation
Jackfruit can be cultivated in any type of soil, but still, deep loam and sandy loam soils are suitable for its gardening. Its cultivation requires a lot of water. The fruits begin to appear after about 4 to 5 years after growing the plant from seed.
For this, the seeds should be grown in the soil as soon as they are removed from the jackfruit. Two methods are used to make its seedlings. Jackfruit has a good price in the market.
If more than 150 saplings are planted in one hectare, then the yield can be from 3 to 4 lakhs in a year. Jackfruit plant starts giving yield in 3 to 4 years. Its yield varies depending on the variety.
Arun Singh, who grows jackfruit in Meerut district of Uttar Pradesh, says that when he started cultivating it, he was made fun of. But he didn’t give up.
For the first time in the year 2018, the trees started bearing fruit. In the very first year, Arun sold jackfruit worth about 8 lakhs. Next time the income has increased to 16 lakhs and this time jackfruit worth about 20 lakhs has been sold.
Arun told that after gardening, four years of patience has to be maintained. During this, you can cultivate the vacant land below. After this, trees give fruit for 45 years, yes, necessary medicines have to be sprayed from time to time.
